Can you start bad habits with your puppy by holding it too much?

we have a brand new puppy, about 2 months old, Lab mix. He doesn't play much right now, he just sleeps. He is very loving and just wants to be held. He is a little skid dish of sounds n such. Can we spoil him by holding him too much? We hold that he is a good family dog that will run and play with my son, and who likes to go on runs.
