Columbia University Question?

My friend recently got accepted into Columbia University. They have continuously sent her brochures for her to send an application to them (they have been doing it for 3 years). Her GPA is a 3.7 and ACT of 27. I mean not to be mean but her grades aren't "outstanding". I thought you need to have amazing grades to get into this university, why did they accept her
