What's the difference between a cinder cone and a stratovolcano?

They both look exactly the same. Can someone tell me why an eruption occurs? My lecturer said that it is similar to CocoCola (when it explodes), the pressure decreases hence all the gases explode upwards. But what causes the decrease in pressure, is it the movement in tectonic plates?
